Review Tryout Lunar Clock
2026, May 18 by Dutch Progveteran Rob Hanemaayer
On Sunday afternoon, my good friend Paul Rijkens and I headed to Bergen in North Holland to witness a try-out performance by the prog band Lunar Clock at music café Taverne.
Some of those present were audibly there for the atmosphere, but fortunately, quite a few visitors had also come for the music.
Nevertheless, a significant portion of the former group was eventually captivated during the approximately hour-and-a-half-long performance by the sounds Lunar Clock produced—admittedly melodic and atmospheric, but not always easy to grasp.
Their mix of Canterbury-esque, sometimes slightly jazzy-tinged prog, symphonic rock à la Camel, passages in ambient atmospheres, and somewhat experimental sounds was undeniably fascinating.
The return of guitarist Shardan Stream, which means the band is once again a quartet, was an additional positive factor. Thanks to his contributions, the songs played gained that little extra fire to make it all just a bit more exciting. But the smoothly drumming Karsten van Straten, the refined plucking of his six-string bass Achille Regazzoni, and keyboardist/singer Robin Boer also held their own.
There were a few minor technical issues at times, but that didn’t spoil the fun.
All in all, it was a successful concert, after which we concluded the evening with a delicious meal at restaurant De Vrolijke Pater in Alkmaar.
